To take power away from the government and put it in the hands of the people who elect the leaders rather than the leaders themselves. Free speech/assembly, the ability to talk back and directly to government officials and to hold them accountable for their decisions. Free religious choice takes away the government's ability to make religion another arm of their power, allowing religions to essentially be autonomous social entities that are not beholden to the state.
