I just watched a little of The Janice Dickenson Modeling Agency. It horrifies me to watch these adults tearing apart every inch of these girls' bodies. As a mom I am so worried about what will influence my daughter as she gets a bit older. I think this show just lights the path to eating disorders and low self esteem.
What do you think?

My little sister-in-law is 9 and already talks about how fat she thinks she is and that she wants to go on a diet! I totally agree with you. I am so sick of today's superfical society! There are 3 billion women on this planet that don't look like super models - and 8 who do! Really, they're the odd ones! Make sure your daughter is involved with social and educational things - Girl Scouts, sports, church groups, whatever. Hopefully her confidence in herself will overpower the media hype. American Girl Magazine was really empowering for me throughout elementary and (don't tell!) jr. high. Good luck, mom!

I have not watched TV in 15 years or I would have some idea of what you are talking about.

Step 1: Unplug the TV
Step 2: Throw it out.

Now look, TV tries to find the most outragous thing it can show. I mean Jerry Springer has a show for God's sake.

They are showing the absolute worst behavior they can get away with without an FCC fine.

That show is likely MADE to make you feel that way. It isn't normal adult behavior. So I would not sweat it too much.

I agree! The society is so wrapped up in stick thin super models that they do not realize the average person is affected subconciously by it. Your thoughts are like those of millions of other mothers and are natural. Just make sure your child listens to Toon Disney on the radio and watches the Disney channel or any other family/child appropiate show. Use a channel blocker (many of the new tv's have them & cable usually provides a parental block as well) don't worry, your not alone

I'm 19-years-old and I think I've battled with self-esteem issues my entire life because of the influence of the media. I'm not unlike the majority of girls my age. I've watched that show too - one part of me admires Janice Dickinson for overcoming the sexual abuse she was exposed to as a child and making something of her life, while the other part of me really questions just what she "made of" her life by selling her body to such a soulles, shallow industry. I think young women feel torn all the time. As women, we want to admire these famous people but at the same time I think we all realize how much they're actually HURTING our cause. It's such a difficult issue.

I'm not a mom, but I gotta say, the majority of shows on now do make me concerned for young teens and children. The images portrayed is what they want to become, and they don't realize that could mean tehy will end up: very sick, raped, whored, or maybe even dead.

i agree with you a hundred percent. my girlfriend had a eating disorder when she was younger and till this day if she eats alot or more than what she thinks she should she starts to cry because she is remembering when she had this and how much it hurt her and everyone around her. these typs of shows should only come on when all kids are in bed.

I Agree. Our young adults are being attacked from all sides and convinced that they are only "worthy" if they are slender and pretty. No wonder our kids are in chaos. They need to learn to love themselves the way GOD made them. Eat healthy, get plenty of exercise and learn to give back to humanity.

i most definitely agree that's why we as parents must administer the fundamentals and guide our children.just because it "looks enticing"doesn't mean it's right for them.i don't take anything away form modeling for a career but let that be the adult models decision,an hopefully not harm their bodies or their self-esteem.

listen i think your totally right i'm not a mom but if people want to go messing up there lives let them do it but if you can help them help them but you don't need to starve your self to loose weight. if you really want to loose weight and be one of those skinny models eat healthy thats what i do i meen i'm not the skinniest person alive but i'm a good weight for my age.

Strongly agree. Young girls shouldn't constantly be worried if they're thin enough...They won't have any confidence at all
