Good question, and where did the word come from? Who decided to put 'h' and 'i' togrther and think it sohuld be a wrod??

It's a formal hello, it'll be kinda rude if someone just came up to you and started talking, it's also a type of attention getter, if someone just started a conversation without saying hi/hello/what's up, you wouldn't know who the conversation was directed to.

to express a greeting but usually they could say how do you do hello bon'jure our good afternoon .our someone interduceing you .you could say pleasure
