hi kamikaze, When I get a virus it often begins in some part of my body that either has damage or was hurt in the past. A virus comes on very quickly unlike the slow progress of a bacterial infection. The fact that no recent activity precipitated your serious symptoms and the pain is uni-lateral tells me you need to do three things before paying a doc. Drink extra fluids that contain no caffeine, spend time with your legs above your heart each day (sleeping doesn't count unless your legs are above your heart) without strain on the knees, take a pain reliever to ease your pain but don't increase your activity 'till you feel better. If it is a virus you may feel worse now, get going on the fluids. Take good care of yourself.

depending on your normal activity and family genes it could be a number of things. it could be simple growing pains (if youre young enough) or it could be the beginnings of tendonitis or junior arthritis. i suffered from knee pain when i was young and no x-ray show any signs of anything untill i was older. when i told my doctor that it went from one knee to the other (thats from overuse to relieve pain in the first knee) and then to my wrists, elbows, shoulders and back he did a series of tests and it was conclusive to be tendonitis. if you have arthritis in your family this could be early signs of that, too. ive read in health mags and from my mom (Rheumatoid Arthritis sufferer for 27 years) that in some people tendonitis can sometimes lead to arthritis.
I say wear your knee brace whenever your physically active and talk to your doctor about the problem. If theres nothing genetically there, then it could just be a sprain or a strain. Bottom line is talk to your doc. and see what he/she says. What doesnt kill you will only make you stronger.

Sounds like you may have "water on the knee" See a Doctor to get a real answer. Don't be diagnosed by any of us.

you need to go to a Dr he can take an X-ray and tell you more about what is going on in your knee. It may be just injured, whatever he finds, you will have a diagnosis and he will be able to recomend the treatment you need.

try stretching your quads and hamstrings really well, you might just be tight, if that doesn't work it might be a stress fracture in the patella, go get an x-ray.
