Is he still writing/singing. I think that I saw him on PBS's show Austin City Limits. Google his name, see if he's performing someplace or doing a book signing. Then go!

Write to him. While he might not be able to meet with you in person, there's a chance you'll still get an autographed photo of him.
Find out if he's doing any tours or anything like that in the future and try to go to a show.
