They are completely different animals, but are distantly related, rather like the zebra and the horse are related ... somewhere back in their ancestory, their two evolutionary paths veered off into separate species. This article on the Swamp Wallaby explains this really well - and I quote - "Although they look like other members of the kangaroo family (made up of around 65 species), their teeth, chromosomes, skull and blood are different. Scientists believe they are very similar to the early ancestor of all kangaroos" -

There are in fact several different species of wallabies -

And several different species of kangaroos -

Potoroos are also members of the kangaroo family -

And so are quokkas -

And there is also a "tree kangaroo" which is another separate species -

Wallabys are a smaller cousin of they Kangaroo, and there are more spiecies of them but very few different spiecies of Kangaroos. Also some spiecies of Wallabys can climb trees. One last difference is that Kangaroos alwase have 3 babies at all times; One in the womb, one in the pouch, and one older one at her heels. Wallabys usually only have 1 to 2 babies with them. Kangaroos can also prouduce 2 kind of milk for her joeys. One kind for they infint in the pouch and one for the older joey at her heels. Also when baby Wallabys get to big to be in the pouch there moms don`t let they nurse anymore unlike Kangaroos who let there babys nurse untill there about a year old.
