Holmes always seems to know the identity of the killer fairly early. He spends much of the story doing some odd thing or other in order to prove or disprove his theory. A classic example of this is "Silver Blaze." He pieces it together early on (because of the curious incident of the dog), discreetly keeps the identity to himself, and then searches for concrete proof of his theory -- which he finds. Given that that is how Holmes operates, I'd have to say Holmes would finish first.
