Why does concrete crack?
Cracks in concrete are the result of a failure to provide sufficient construction joints, which accommodates drying shrinkage and thermal movement in the concrete structure or slab.
When do cracks in concrete occur?
Most cracks develop within the first two years after the structure is poured. However, in poured concrete foundation walls, shrinkage cracks can develop immediately after the walls have been poured.

Can a crack in concrete grow?
Yes. Freezing and thawing in the surroundings cause the concrete to move.

How are cracks in concrete repaired?
Cracks in flat work require a flexible urethane caulk. Cracks in foundation walls should be repaired with epoxy injection. If the foundation walls are block or stone construction, the application of a elastomeric membrane will achieve a permanent repair.

What is "stitching a crack" and how important is it?
Stitching is the process of installing a one foot steel rebar inside the wall across the crack that is being injected. As the crack is being filled with epoxy the bar is also encapsulated with epoxy securing it in place. This rebar prevents the foundation crack from ever breaking again, even when the ground freezes and pushes against the wall. By installing a stitch, the mechanic knows he can issue a Lifetime Guarantee.

The above answers are true... but it could also be from using the wrong kind of ice melt product durring the winter if you get ice or snow... You should never use Sodium chloride AKA rock salt on a concrete driveway or walkway... there are ice melting products made specifically for use on concrete. Just ask when buying for the concrete safe kind.
