Since you asked this question in "Networking" I'm going to go out on a limb and answer the question I think you're really asking. MAC stands for Medium Access Control. The "medium" refers to the physical transmission medium such as copper wire, fiber, or the air for wireless. The MAC protocol is what "controls" how stations get "access" to the "medium". Thus the name Medium Access Control. MAC is the lower sublayer of the OSI Data Link layer. The most common MAC protocol is IEEE 802.3 Ethernet with it's CSMA/CD scheme. This is basically the "listen before you talk" scheme but it also detects and responds to collisions. Another example of a MAC scheme is token passing, where a special "token" frame is passed around and you cannot transmit unless you also have the token.

The other answer is: mac is a physical address that is unique for every network adapter. It is used to map IP addresses to specific hardware (mac address). It's the physical part of the TCP/IP stack that makes networking and the internet work.
