Everytime I pick up a pen, either jumbled nonsensical sentences or horrible excuses for sentences are born. I used to be a respectable writer, but it's been a while since I've written anything. Any ideas on how to improve writing?

Yes! Write!
I read a quote somewhere once that changed the way I think about the passion for writing that we seem to share. The quote was simply... "You can't fix a blank page".
The point is to just write! Write what you know. What you feel. What you love. Write what no one else knows until you share it. Write about your passions, your hopes. Write about what means the most to you. Whatever it is... write! You can fix the grammar later.

Ummmmmm.... I would argue that there is indeed such a thing as "writers block".

What your getting when you write is your mind trying to focus on a particular point or thought. If your thoughts are jumbled...then so will your writing.

What I found works for me, is to first come up with an idea, then to type thoughts around that idea as though I were actually speaking to someone. I find that the best writing I do is in a narrative style. Try telling a story first. Then write down the story as if you were telling it to a friend. Then you can rewrite it with your own imbellishments.

Well maybe you just need to relax and let what you need to write come to you. I think there is such thing as writer's block cause you can't think of anything to write.

Well that depends--are you trying to write fiction, or non-fiction? Assuming your interests are in writing fiction, the technique that works for me is to simply watch TV with the sound off. Without the audio cues that come from speech and sound effects, your brain will start filling in the plot for you. You can use that as a launchpad for new ideas very easily!

Bring your notebook outdoors, and write descriptions of all the people and things you see. That should get you going. Do it every day, till you get back on track.

Clear your mind...meditate or get out in nature. Creativity can't be forced, it has to flow naturally. Sometimes you just need a break from it.
