You can use warm dishwasher soap and soak the filter for a half an hour to an hour or so. Rinse it out real well with LITTLE pressure. Don't use compressed air to blow the unit dry. Let the filter sit in the sun if possible.
Use the K&N oil when the filter has dried. Don't go crazy with the oil. Many folks over spray the red oil thinking they are helping the engine when in fact, they eventually damage the sensors on fuel injection models.

I'm not quite sure exactly what you're asking...do you want to know an ALTERNATIVE to the K&N cleaning kit, or something to use in ADDITION to it?
If you're looking for something to use in addition to the cleaning solvent and oil, nothing else is needed; if you are looking for something to use INSTEAD of the K&N products... some people have put the filter in the washing machine to clean it...I don't recommend this though, as it could damage the filter and leave some oily residue in the washer. A good cleaner is just good old Dawn dish soap and hot water, (not too much soap however...) in a large bucket. Let the filter soak, rinse it thoroughly with clean water, and let it completely air dry before re-oiling. I'd still recommend using the K & N filter oil to re-oil the filter though; other types of oils may damage the filter. Also, don't use too much oil; use only a little in the pleats as recommended.
You are best off spending a few bucks and getting the cleaning kit... you have already invested in the filter, so go all the way. The materials supplied in it will last a long time.
Hope this info helped a little.

I think he is asking what can you use beside the high $$$ K&N Oil. I have the same question cause we use it on my dirt track car and have to clean it at least every other week if not every week depending on the track conditions. we use to run a pre filter til we noticed it was too restricting. took it off and car felt like it gained 20hp. So i too am looking for a cheaper alternative

You can wash it out under water, but you'll still have to oil it before it goes back in the car. Best to go with the kit.

hot soapy water, I use DAWN dish soap and hot water. Then I spray my filter with K&N filter oil, "I don't skimp on that".
