You are correct ... no matter what we do in just a few million years the earth will be just fine. The earth could really care less ......
The earth could also care less if at any particular time slime-mold is the highest form of life on the planet.
While the earth is not fragile at all there is a fairly narrow line that we have to stay between for we fragile humans to live on it.

I greatley agree with what you are saying, but has I am currently undergoing a new scheme which is nicknamed 'The Green Scheme' and will be featured as a program on channel 4, I can only half agree....Although life will never die out (touch wood) we, has humans are still making the planet a hard place to live in not just for us but for all animals and different kinds of living....People really need to start thinking of the PLANET & LIFE and stop thinking about bussiness and money!
I would like to finish by quoting;
'Humans are said to be the smartest living things in the worl, so why are we the only one's runing the planet?'

I agree to some extent. The earths history has always been plagued by extreme disasters which wipe out the most prominent race and new life flourishes e.g. dinosaurs. If a disaster happened today which wiped out the human race, you can bet your bottom dollar that at least some life would survive - most probably bacterial. New life would grow and adapt to the conditions. I think that global warming was happening anyway but that pollution by humans has speeded it up. you should read "a short history of nearly everything" by Bill Bryson. It's so interesting and it talks about this subject in it. Gives you a lot to think about!

The earth is a few billion years old, it's entitled to be fragile.
But it will go on & on & on, but we won't.
You can care all you want about the earth, but if a large meteorite hits it, or we get one of those monstrous volcanic eruptions, do you think that it will say " oops, sorry human race" I forgot about you.
I agree that we are to blame for much of the pollution, but the earth will deal with that in its own way. I am very much more sceptical about so called global warming, I think that that has been hi-jacked by the anti-capitalist brigade for their own ends.
It has been reported that ordinary water vapour(clouds) contributes more to warming than co2 emissions. Not to mention sun spots and long term climatic cycles. As you say, the earth has an amazing re-balancing ability, but it is not trying to change for our benefit, it doesn't have a concience. Anyway, we are far more likely to destroy ourselves, there are enough crackpots in the world.

I'm a cynical engineer with scientific background and... yes I buy the theory that life for big organisms like us could get quite unpleasant in the next few generations. The theories that underly it are ones that work well with the engineering analysis, so much so that as I read about the mechanisms of climate stability, I find myself saying, well how could it be otherwise?
I agree that life in general will survive for many aeons yet, but humans are in for a pretty tough time of it in the near future. I'm more concerned for my daughter than life in general. From that point of view, climate change really does bite.
The first answer you got here is the best.

Capitals is shouting and its rude.
You're completely missing the point. Companies that kick dioxins and heavy metals into the ecosystem cannot recall them. It is fascistic. It is against the Geneva Convention to poison your enemies well and yet our own countrymen do it to us.
We are not just affecting us, we are affecting our neighbours and other species, and for what? So we can have all the plastic toys we didn't know we wanted until we saw them. Its immature. Its like a toddler throwing a tantrum, or the playground bully.
We just don't have the moral right to do it. We haven't evolved, or grown, or learned how to provide a basic standard of living for everyone. Its sick.
And its indefensible.

I agree 100% We will trash the planet to the point that it can no longer support us, we will die, and balance will be restored. I don't think that we can destroy this planet if we tried.
