...just curious what the average medium size tattoo costs. How do they base their prices - by the size of the tattoo and artwork involved or by where it is placed on the body

Tattoos on girls look really cheap and tacky.
Unless you live on a council estate/trailer park - don't bother.

It depends on several factors. If there is a lot of detail in the artwork, it'll cost more..if there are a lot of different colors, or if there needs to be a lot of shading done...also it depends on the tattoo place you go! Some charge a standard fee and others charge you by the hour(and usually have a 3 or 4 hour minimum)
Just figure out what you want on you and then schedule consultations with several different places to try to get an estimate.
You'll probably spend between $100 and $400 on a "medium" tattoo.

Well, I have a fairly big tattoo on my back, which cost about 350...but even so, it was well worth the price. And, lol, since I feel asleep getting it, the artist actually added on to it; so it's even bigger than what it was supposed to be.
I then have a relatively good sized shamrock on my ankle, that cost me 70...but there wasn't much detail to it.
It all depends on the artist, the detail, and the size. Sometimes it depends on the body part...but not usually.
And, I don't personally think tattoos are tacky or "white trashy"...and if you want it, then get it. Some say, well what are you going to say when you're 80...my answer to that is, hey, I had a good time and I have nothing I regret and even if my shamrock looks more like a grass blade...oh well, I can still look at and remember when I got it, and how much I enjoy(ed) it...life is about experiences; and you learn about yourself the more you experience.
So, I would find a tattoo you love, ask how much and go from there. Enjoy your skin and love it...you only get one chance to make it truly your own.

A shop usually has a minimum charge amount... the first one I went to was $85... OMG! I almost sh*t a brick... all I wanted was my daughters name! But I found a shop that has a $40 minimum... I have a medium sixed one on my lower back (about 6 inches across & 3 inches up and down) and I only paid $60 plus tip for it. I have one on my ankle and I paid $35 for it and my daughters name was $45. I would walk into the shop either with your idea or browse through their books and see how much they charge. Not only are different shops different prices, but the artists can charge whatever they want as well!! Good Luck

Depends on how intricate the tattoo is. I have a Celtic Cat Knot that covers the area between my shoulder blades and it cost about $200 in San Jose, California. I have my brothers' Sergeant Stripes, his name, USMC, and two roses on my left ankle and it cost about $300 in S.F, California. It also depends on how long it takes and if you want color. My knot is basic blue/black and took about 2 hours, whereas the one on my left ankle, the roses are in full color and it took about 3.5 hours.

The main thing is to find a clean, reputable shop. They should have an autoclave that they should be willing to show you and they should open the sterile packages in front of you. They should wear a mask and gloves at all times. The ink should be poured into sterile cups, not taken straight from the bottle.

Tattoo's are permanent and you shouldn't be pricing around for the cheapest one. You should find an artist who makes you feel comfortable and who really listens to what you want. Remember, you get what you pay for.

The place here charges $100 an hour with a minimum of $50.

Don't listen to bronnimoose, She's apparently on some kind of high horse and thinks she knows what's best for all of us. Tattoos are only tacky if you pick a tacky design.

I have one of a cat playing with a yin/yang symbol that is about thesize of my hand between my shoulder blades. It was 240.00 I think price depends on the artists reputation and if you want stock art or something unique. Tip, don't put it where you will always see it or you may get tired of it. Think twice about getting it in a boney spot (OOOWEEEEE)
