For swim lessons, where kids have fun, here are some good ones:

tag.. you would be amazed how much fun it is in the water, walls are base.. so much fun. and they have to do a set while they are doing it ( for more experienced swimmers )

cone.. have an orange cone in the bottomo of the pool, and have 2 or 3 kids per lane.. you can play power cone or poison cone.. the object of the game is either to have the cone in the bottom of your lane at the end of the set.

Those two are more when you ahve a workout and you want to have fun..

there are reflex games, that are a lot of fun:
stand in the middle of the pool and pick names for both ends.. and whenever you say the name, everyone sprints to that side.. you can change the names, and trick the kids.. and award points to whoever gets there first

and I know many more.. if you choose me as best answer and email me, i can give you more

We always play sharks and Menos

You can play titanic which is that the Titanic is sinking. The people playing the game have to swim underwater from one wall to another. If you make it you swim back to the starting wall.
If you go up for air, you are out.

My favorite game is Jump, Twist, or Dive. (You need to be in a deep pool or on a starting block) The Coach says go. The swimmers jump. When they are in the air, the coach says JUMP, TWIST OR DIVE. If they do the correct thing, they get a point. the first to 3 gets a prize. You can also add dance, sing, flap like a bird, yell, kick, and fly

Other games are
Marco polo
Colors
that is it

My coach called it "Mob Ball".

What you do is have two teams after you split up the whole team. The team will then choose the offensive and defensive members of the team (usually the offensive are the best swimmers and the defensive are the slower swimmers). After the ball is thrown in, by the coach, it's usually a free for all. Whoever has the ball will be jumped and nearly drown by the weight of people on their back.

The objective: Get the ball to the other side of the pool and touch the wall.

I don't recommend this game for little kids.

Sharks and Minnows is always good. Except I put twists on it to get the kids to practice a particular skill. Like if I want them to practice their freestyle stroke I'll do something like " The minnows that do a perfect freestyle and can swim away won't get eaten, but you have to do it like we practiced" blah blah blah.

Mining for treasure is good, and also helps practice arm skills.
You have them pretend their arms are like pick axes and whoever can do the best arm movements mines the most treasure and therefore wins.

Frog Legs is a good game for practicing sidestroke. You pretend you're a crazy chef that's going to eat them unless they can side stroke away from you in time...

Racing games and contests also seem to get the kids involved and practicing skills.

Game #1 - Colors. ONe person stands out of the water while the others are in the water at the edge of the pool . The person out of the water turns around , back towards the ppl in the water. The ppl in the water are right behind the person on land.. Ppl in water think of a color. Person on land calls out colors. when a person in the water hears their color called, the must silently swim to the other side of the pool with outh the person on the land hearing them. If person on land thinks they hear someone swimming, they turn around and jump into the water and try to tag the person swimming before they get to the other end. You can also do different categories instead of colors ( girls names that start with the letter a, animals , reptiles, differnt types of swimming strokes etc.
Game #2 Marco Polo.- pretty simple, one person is it. They close their eyes, call out Marco others call out Polo. Marco who is it tries to locate the other ppl by hearing them reply 'Polo'. IF they think someone is out of the water, they call fish out of water and the person out of water is out. ONce they tag someone, that person is it. You can also change Marco Polo to something like Dairy queen or burger kIng or etc....
helpful tip : People who are not it should warn the person with closed eyes when they are about to hit a wall.

Game #3- Red Light Green light.- It is just like Red light green light onland except of course it is in water. A person preferrably the teacher calls out a color red green or yellow. Everyone starts on one side of the pool. Red light = stop. You do not have to stress the you cannot move thing cuz of course they ahve to tread water during red light unless it's shallow water. yellow light = continue slowly green light = go as fast as you can before they call the differnet color. first one to other side of pool wins.

Game #4 Friendly race- You could do a race i.e.say first lap breast stroke second lap backstroke third lap anyway you'd like.... see who wins......

Hope this helped... : )
