a kid plays baseball:
- 1/7th of his hits were doubles
- 12.5% of his hits were home runs
- 82 singles
- No Triples

How many hits did he have?

Seriously and can you tell me how you do it

x = total hits
doubles = 1/7 of x, or x/7
home runs = 12.5% of x or 0.125x
singles = 82

x = x/7 + 0.125x + 82
multiply both sides by 7
7x = x + 0.875x + 574
subtract x from both sides
6x = 0.875x + 574
subtract 0.875x from both sides
5.125x = 574
divide both sides by 5.125
x = 112

the kid had 112 hits

Ok, first you need to find what percentage of each type of hit he had. You also already know he had 82 singles and no triples.
Use the fraction 1/7 (for the doubles) and make it into a percentage. do this by actually dividing 1 by 7 and moving the decimal two places to the RIGHT. (I hope you have a calculator)

1/7 = ~.143
.143 becmes 14.3%

Now add the percentages together...
14.3% (doubles) + 12.5% (homeruns) = 26.8%

Here is where logic comes in. if 26.8% of your hits were doubles OR homeruns and no hits were triples, then the rest were singles, right?

So 100% (all hits) - 26.8% (doubles and homeruns) = 73.2%

Now you know that 73.2% of your hits were singles. You also know that you had 82 singles. So it makes sense that 82 is 73.2% of all your hits.

A percentage is a number over 100 so 73.2% is 73.2/100 of, to make it simpler, 732/1000.

Now, set up a porportion.
732/1000 = 82/x

yep, now you got a pesky variable 'x'. To solve this porportion, you 'cross multiply and divide'. In this case you multiply 82 and 1000 to get 82000 and then you divide by 732 which should give you 'x'.

82000/732 = ~112.022

Ok, so rounding skewed our answer just a bit but 'x' is 112. Therefore the total amound of hits is 112. You can also check your answer by taking 82 (total singles) / 112 (total hits) and see if you get 73.2% (percentage singles)

I hope this helps!

12.5% = 12.5/100 = 1/8
1/7 doubles
1/8 home runs
1/7 + 1/8 = 8/56 +7/56 = 15/56
home runs, doubles, and singles added together equal 1
home runs and doubles = 15/56
so singles = 41/56
singles = 41/56
singles = 82
82 = 41/56
2 = 1/56
1/56 x 56 = 1
2 x 56 = 112
the answer is 112

There are 4 different kinds of hits: singles, doubles, triples, and homeruns. So adding these 4 together gives you total hits.
Call total hits "x"
Singles = 82
Doubles = 1/7x
Triples= 0
Home Runs = .125x

Add these 4 together to get total hits (x) - so your equation would look like this:

82 + 1/7x + 0 + .125x = x

Solve this equation for x and you know the number of hits.
It should work out - I got 112

Total = Singles + Doubles + Triples + Home Runs
T = A + B + C + D
T = 82 + T/7 + 0 + 0.125*T
T - T/7 - 0.125*T = 82
T - T/7 - T/8 = 82
56T/56 - 8T/56 - 7T/8 = 82
41T/56 = 82
T = 82*56/41
T = 112
