For the record, automobiles have NOT killed more people than all the wars in the 20th C!
Number of car deaths - estimated at 60 -70 million (A pessimistic estimate)
Deaths in wars - Vietnam 5.4 million
WW2 - between 40 - 60 million
WW 1 - 15 - 23 million
Plus other smaller scale wars in the 20th C are believed to have killed more than 235 million people (YES THATS RIGHT 235 MILLION! Hard to comprehend isnt it!) , this includes civil wars.
So even the major wars of the 20th C equal the number of deaths from automobiles. Don't be mislead by the propaganda of anti automobile campaigners, even though the work they do is often very fair and for an extremely good cause/ reason.

Some might say the Atomic bomb is the single most deadly invention, but I tend to think the deadliest invention is hatred.

Where would gunpowder be without a source of ignition? Where would the internal combustion engine, the bullet, the gun and the atomic bomb be without the means to smelt metal. The first primitive spears without heat hardened points. The BBQ without under-cooked salmonella chicken. Man's ability to control fire (or otherwise) has surely been the mother of all destruction.

Maybe the most deadly discovery, not invention, would be mans ability to make fire through the use of a spark. The spark then leads directly to the ability to use gunpower and the gas powered engine.

Are you sure it is not the automobile? In the U.S. alone, almost 500,000 people die every decade in car crashes. Of course, the car has not been around as long as gunpowder. But more people die in the U.S. annually 'by car' than 'by gun'. So with a little more time, the car will surely overtake gunpowder as the deadliest invention.
