Why does Canada prefere girls like China preferes boys?

I just read an aritcle and a bit of infor was that Canadians prefere to have girl babies just like China wants boys.

Why?

I know China prefers boys, because they're expected to support their parents in their latter years. I would guess Canada has or expects a shortage of females.
