If there is no universal/eternal truth, then you're right -- it really doesn't matter in the least.

Without any sort of eternal existence, the major problem (as you point out) is that we all eventually die.

Whatever we do for ourselves thus ceases to matter when we die.

Now, we can choose to do things to help others -- but in the end, they would cease to exist as well, and so all our efforts on THEIR behalf wouldn't have mattered either.

Ultimately, if people are mortal, and if there is no existence after death, then (really) it doesn't matter what you do or don't do.

Live for yourself, hurt and abuse others, help them and feed them, do whatever you'd like. Whether you live a good life or bad life, it ultimately means nothing at all. None of your choices have any lasting effect. Your life is pointless.

(Note: Any materialists with integrity would finish themselves off if they were willing to carry their philosophy to its ultimate conclusion.)

It's a pretty bleak way to live, and it's one reason why many people choose to believe that something eternal exists. Unless something transcends death, life is but a vapor, and is quickly spent.

We live because we have been born and because living is better than the alternative. The point of reaching your goals is achieving the things you want out of life and being able to acquire the things you wish to possess. You have a better chance of reaching some level of happiness in your life if you reach the goals you set, rather than if you don't reach them or if you don't set any goals at all.

The point is to leave a legacy behind, so you can be remembered forever as a good person. No one really knows how life started. As for why it did, I think it was just a freak accident, but the point is, savor the good things and work hard for a better life. If you work hard and make more money now, but still enjoy the small things, then you will get to retire and enjoy your last years. Love, friendship, and all the small things are everything. Savor what you have, don't wish for what you don't. Best wishes.

Reproduce and perfect humanity. Each generation of human beings should be better than the last. The nature of the universe is to expand and as humans are physical manifestations of the universe, it is our nature, as well as all living things, to procreate. As far as reaching goals, look at it as a distraction or look at it as a way to gain more knowledge/experience. Trying to reach the singularity again while paradoxically expanding.

We live because we need to pay off our karma. Once we are karma-free, we reach enlightenment, and we no longer need to live, or at least our souls. But, if we die and there's still karma to be paid, we reincarnate to pay it off. And so on... until we reach God, or perfection that is. Now, reaching our goals while living, that is just a way to spend our living lives better! Or what? You rather spend your living life the crappy way? Personally, I prefer to reach my goals and have the time of my life while paying off my karma debt?

Basically, it all boils down to really living. We strive for goals to live our dreams and get every possible moment we can from life and enjoying it.

Reach not for your goals, reach for the Lord. The Lord is the purpose of your life, whether you think so or not.
