In response to a previous post... 7 or 8 koi in a 48 gallon tank?! WTF are you thinking? I'm sorry, I don't usually go off on people.. but if you don't know what you're talking about, please don't give advice about living creatures! Put yourself in a little box - one that you could BARELY curl up in yet alone stretch out in, take out 85% of the oxygen and see how you'd like it. arrrghh!

1) It depends - on the size of the koi at the present time. If it's a goldfish size, then yes. - that's plenty of tank. I have one in my 60 gallon tank.. and he's only 3" long.

HOWEVER you need to start digging outside right now.. coz you need about 1,000 gallons of water to make that fish happy. You could probably do smaller.. many people do. But why stop at 500 gallons when you could give 1,000. Mine just went into my 1,500 gallon pond outside a weekend or two ago when the weather got warmer. He'll stay there the rest of his lfie :) The better the filtration and water movement, the more fish you can put in there.. but why cram the critter just for your own satisfaction?

2) They will not just 'grow to the size of the tank' - it will cause problems.. you don't want to try and stunt the fish with the size of the tank (in the case of a koi).

3) The koi are probably trying to get the freak out of the little plastic ponds. No, actually this is normal for them.

The koi in the stores are only there temporarily until they get a new home. It would be similar to putting you and I in a bathroom just about small enough to turn around in - for a week or until somebody came by to get us. Actually it's a bit worse than that.

I knew a guy who had some koi in a 60 gallon tank. Three of them.. He didn't get why he had to change the filter material every freaking week.. It's coz they need a bigger place to live! I was surprised as hell that they actually lived that long. I'm not one that goes and says you have to dig 6' deep ponds for koi like some say, but I do think a little tank is torture. In my opinion, you can't even buy a tank big enough in a fish store for a koi.

GOLDFISH: They would probably get along. Mine have so far. But the goldfish may eventually get accidentally gobbled up.

Koi need 1000 gallon ponds. Maybe temporarily for small koi a 48 is good. Koi grow well over 3 feet, and do need ponds. Common goldfish are fine with them.

I would recommend using that tank as a tropical community, and when you have the money get a nice pond

no, it is not big enough for koi. they need very large areas. usually when you buy them, they are very young, but they get huge. that is why they are pond fish. Koi are actually just colorful carp. They were origionally raised as food, and eventually were selectively bred to be colorful.

if you plan on having koi and goldfish together, then 48 gallons is definately not enough. not even one koi could live in 48 gallons, and Goldfish produce a lot of amonia, and use up a lot of the oxygen in the water.

koi are best keeped in ponds and to prevent them from jumping out provide a net that surounds the pond. Koi are quite bid fish and if you really want to put them in you 48 gallon tank you sould probably only put 7 or 8 of them in there. and Gold fish and Koi are very similar and would go perfectly fine with Koi

It depends on how big they are. Mostly it is alright to have koi in a tank and it is ok to share with goldfish, just make sure the koi does not attack the goldfish, as this can happen.

Koi get 3 feet long and need at least 250 gallons each, so no a 48 gallon tank isn't even close.

I agree with the dark kitten person.... Koi get huge... and they get dirty... you would need like a 125 for maybe two or three koi..fully grown. I think they can get 28 inches or so...better for a pond of about 400 gallons...

It just be alright but look at it maybe after a dayor two to see if they fight. I didn't know when i put a baby goldfish with a fat minoow together meant that the minnow could get killed with the baby goldfish

No! they need alot of room and will begin to develope health problems without it. It will also stunt their growth.
