It is! If you're smiling then you are experiencing the "Universal Hello", or acknowledgment for one. You cannot really smile unless you mean it, for it is then that your eyes shine. It takes 17 facial muscles to smile and 25 facial muscles to frown....hence it hurts somewhat. To smile shows understanding, or even a childlike innocence, or remembering something wonderful or even experiencing it for the first time. I remember when my first trip to Japan, and the grateful smiles of the people there. I am blonde with blue eyes and therefore somewhat if not very different, many had never seen anyone like me in the more remote regions, and when I smiled it was contagious. As contagious as a yawn.
There are times that I do not feel like smiling, though something impish inside me usually manages to do so.
I love being greeted with one, from someone who doesn't know me, it is an instant icebreaker...and often leads to laughter.
laughter behind smiling eyes is so beautiful that it is like a moment stuck in time. I feel safe and enthused. i cannot help but wonder what makes others smile....and perhaps I will never know...but in my case...it is a joining of humanity. So, in your question "Is it important.." I tend to think yes it is, though perhaps not for the reasons that others might think....however I see it as a gesture of recognition, that you are paying attention to another, it cannot be feigned...and I know there is no storybook answer here, though this is mine. I even smile to myself upon reflection of photographs that i have and periodically drag out just to remember....and just in case yu are wondering, as I sit here tapping the keys, yes .....I am smiling!~It is also a way of silently saying,...."Thank You..."

I recall some well paid for scientific study that proved smiling alone alleviates the mood. So smiling (even fake ones) can make you happy. Smiling also uses fewer facial muscles than frowning. It’s easier, so why not? Lastly, it makes you more approachable by others, more attractive and can raise you income level.

Smiling is body language that reveals happiness and pleasure and joy and acknowledgement of other's. To not smile would connote the opposite.

Not smiling could be considered a symptom of a psychological illness.

When teaching a class, if yo want the students to warm up: smile. But if you want authority: keep eye contact with no expression on your face. They'll get the message.

It is. Only a friend's smile once helped me at least for that moment to forget about my worries.
