The moment when the student's eyes light up, the light bulb "pops" over their head, and they start getting excited about learning.

As a special ed teacher working with students (ages 6 through 11) with learning disabilities, this is especially the case.... the student's confused excitement when I hear the startled shout, "Miss, I didn't read it, I just knew what it said!"

To most LD students, "reading" means the decoding struggle, not the understanding of the text. When the decoding finally smoothes out....

It means that, finally, the student has started to bypass and compensate for his/her learning disability, and has "broken the code" as an emerging fluent reader.

I have a bin full of "give-away" books of all genres and subjects, for the new reader to select from for home leisure reading.

It means that someone's future just brightened... college instead of flipping burgers for a living their whole life. I also have a whole bunch of handouts about LD and College.

Teaching is a creative and rewarding career. To be the teacher that gets a student hooked on reading at grade 4 and 5 is satisfying beyond any end of year bonus.

Summers seem nice, but mine are spent going to school, working in my room which gets dismantled for floor waxing and finally getting around to cleaning my house.

Also, with many of the pressures these days to teach to standardized tests -- the career is not what it used to be. Morale can be bad, administrators poor, and the pay is not up to par.

However, if you are intelligent, creative, and have a bit of backbone you can handle it and you can make a difference in a child's life.

Being a teacher is a big responsibility. U have to take care of the kids, and teach them and make them work hard enough now so later in their lifes they wont have to worry about their future. Teachers establish the childrens' futures. Without their cooperation today we wouldnt have doctors, enigeers, teachers, and other careers people wouldnt consider until they face such situations without education. =)

Certainly not for the money. Be a teacher if you want to be challenged everyday, laugh everyday, and get smiles and hugs from children everyday. It is very hard but also very rewarding.

Imagine there were no teachers in schools. There would be no Clintons and Nixons and Jeffersons and etc.
