1. Remove the trim on the interior and exterior with a pry bar, claw hammer, nail puller, what ever it takes to get the trim off. If your planning on reusing it you must take care not to dent. it.
2. Once trim is off this should expose the sides of the window and the gap between the framing and the window frame. ID all fasteners, nails, screws etc. Use a Sawz all with a long metal cutting blade to slip between the framing the the window and cut all the fasteners.
3. At this point some windows will pull out, other may be two piece with a hidden slip join between the outside frame and the inside frame. If possible ID any finish nails that have been set to tie the two together and then remove.
4. If the window is a double hung you may be able to remove the window sections prior to removing the frame. If so this helps a lot.
5. Take brick mould trim from outer sash.
6. If your not saving the window then just do as above and cut til you hit framing.

Before removing - you might want to check on retro fitting. The company uses the basic frame and goes from there. We did it and it is drop dead beautiful! Very cost efficient and the crew did our whole house - picture windows and all in less than 4 hours. Check this before you tear everything out!

Assuming they are timber windows.Take out the sashes'then saw through the vertical sash boxes about halfway down. You should then be able to lever off the rest of the frame starting with the sides you have just cut. It's really not that difficult.
