Yeah right. 98% of SUV owners never take their vehicle off road and would be too pus*sy to as would be worried about scratching the paint or something. They buy SUV's because it makes them feel powerfull and it is an extension of their ego. I used to have a Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited and I took it off-roading all the time and to go camping in the woods. It was awesome. That is why I had a jeep but at least I used it for what it was made for. Look at all the idiots driving the Suburbans and Expiditions etc., do you think they go off road? Heck no. Just a regular city gaper trying to look cool and be someone who they are not. It's these idiots driving huge cars that get 12 MPG that are supporting the damn arabs and muslims by buying so much of their gas.....

To begin with today's vehicle fuel prices are not that bad. Taking into consideration cost of living fuel prices are not as high as they were in the early 1970s and comparable to the fuel prices in the late 1950s.
The big difference is that the cost of government (as a percentage of the Gross Domestic Product) is larger and there by reducing personal purchasing power.
While it is understandable to want to use vehicles which use less fuel, that is not always practical for all people with all uses. For example, we have two vehicles, one is a large conversion van and the other is a pickup. Both are used in commercial functions that wouldn't be possible without them.
Growing up, from 1943 to 1952 we only had trucks in our family because they were required for work.

For a lot of people I think it's a status thing. An SUV is a much better value than a similar size SUV but I guess a minivan doesn't make people feel like a cowboy.

I drive mine because it was given to me by my father, and it's the only car I have. I wlk or ride my bike whenever possible, but for long distance trips, you need a car, and many Americans are still stuck with vehicles that were purchased when gas prices were low.
That said, the first car I purchase will be a hydrid.

SUVs are status symbols, and they certainly DO have a lot of room for families and their "stuff". One survey (I think it was Car and Driver Magazine's) showed that fewer than ten percent of SUV owners ever took them off road.
Why do we keep on buying them when the price of gasoline is at present levels?
We don't - sales drop as soon as gas prices spike, despite the efforts of the Big 3 to promote them (Profit margins are much higher on SUVs and trucks than on passenger vehicles).
Why do sales resume as soon as gas prices begin to drop from their peak levels? (Although they never go as low as they were before the spiral)
Because we have short memories?
Because OPEC doesn't want to keep prices permanently high enough to actually change our buying habits because we're their best customers?
Hmmm.....

Because I have a boat and a camper. Plus I need it for work. I am a contractor. I think all the suburban houswives drive em because you have a ton of kids to bring to soccer practice. I really like the room. If I didn't have the toys or need for work, give me a Honda Insight anytime. I think it looks cool.

I have two trucks that are 4X4. I use one to plow snow with my eight foot Boss super duty plow and to haul things like my two quad's. I have used both trucks to move with on a couple of occasions.
And just so you know, I feel safer and more comfortable riding in a truck vs a car.

Because they are probably selfish and think their SUV's are necessary and cool. (I'm talking about people who drive them simply because they can, not people who need them for work purposes.) They should have to pay extra taxes and higher gas prices then people who drive sensible vehicles or hybrid SUVs.

I drive a large 4 wheel drive truck. I live on a farm and use it for hauling and generally just getting around on the farm.
