I have a new MacBook and an external HDD to be used with it. I used BootCamp and installed windows XP on the MacBook as well. I need to know what format type will allow me to use the HDD on both Mac & Windows?

it depends..we've recorded music using ProTools 6.9 using a Windows formatted Hard Drive to go between studios. I would format it for Windows and I'm 99% sure the Mac side will accept it. If you Format it for Mac, Windows may prompt you to reformat for XP. Good Luck

abode windows frequently recognises 2 filesystems on confusing Disks. Older drives have FAT32 and more recent consisting of i assume your confusing disk is NTFS. What probably befell is that the backup on a Mac used its own filesystem that's recognized on MAC and by no skill on abode windows. because it style of feels you've already lost your records, a format of your hardpersistent gained't make you lose something added. attempt plugging on your hardpersistent in any laptop with abode windows and correctly-click>format. Alternately you may want to favor to apply any of the handfuls of free application obtainable on line to format yourpersistent to NTFS. good success!

FAT 32 is what you want. If you're formatting from your Mac, select "MS-DOS file system" in Disk Utilitiy, and it will automatically format for FAT 32 (Fat 16 if it's a smaller volume).
