Hi,
I was in Ethiopia for almost 3 weeks this past February. I was part of a medical team working with HIV/AIDS patients in the capital. The city is a typical modern African city, with a great deal of pollution/smog...but it is definitely unique. It has a North African /Middle Eastern flair with South African charm!

People are generally friendly, but watch your pockets! Be prepared for a lot of poverty, especially in certain areas of the city. Go to NEW YORK, NEW YORK, for a western style restaurant with great desserts!
If you are looking to get out of the city, take a tour of Lalibela, which is the site of the ancient churches carved into the rock. It is about a 2.5 hour flight from Addis Ababa. You can tour the churches and the area, which is unlike anything you have ever seen...seems like you stepped into Biblical times.

Hope that helps!

i spent january and february of 2006 in Ethiopia. i spent several weeks in Addis Abeba, a week in Dire Dawa, a week in Bahardir and a week in Hamer. if you're looking to sight-see i would suggest the falls at the Blue Nile...they are breathtaking. Lake Tana is also beautiful and there are hippos and crocodiles. Axum is an amazing historical sight. Taxi's are a great way to travel within Addis Abeba because they travel set routes back and forth so you can't get lost. Make sure to register with your embassy when you first arive in Ethiopia. due to the unrest in Somalia there is a mild risk to foreigners. I hope you have a great time.

I used to live in Addis Ababa when I was in the Peace Corps in the 1970's when Haille Selassie was still alive.

It's probably very different now.
