These shirts are similar to the ones worn in the caravans of Marco Polo when he first traveled the spice trail to the orient.
They also had the cool shoes called "Sperry Topsiders"

It was first made for tennis (and it is also called a tennis shirt) by René Lacoste, a tennis player nicknamed "the Crocodile" if you wanted to know where the crocodile emblem came from that's on some shirts, and adopted by polo teams. It was then sold as a Polo (proper noun of a clothing line) shirt as advertised by Ralph Lifschitz (now called Ralph Lauren).

I think they resemble shirts worn by polo players.
