They usually crack because they get too much water too fast. The skin can't grow fast enough to keep up with the inside growth of the tomato.

The reason for cracking tomatoes is that you have let the plants dry out too much between watering.

There are more than one reason tomatoes crack but the most common is uneven watering.Heavy rain or irrigation shortly before or as the fruit are ripening will cause cracking. Over fertilizing as fruit ripen can also cause cracking.
The fruit crack because they are incressing in size at a time ( ripening ) that the skin is no longer growing.
Try shorter watering times.

Don't water the plants just before the tomatoes ripen. That will make them split.
