I’m a high school junior/ incoming senior who recently took the ACT and scored a 23. My GPA is a 3.05 but is not entirely accurate, since i did horrendous academically my freshman year. I am interested in DU (Denver) ASU (Arizona state) and UM (Miami). What are some other competitive schools that would accept me, and how likely am i to get into the schools i just listed?

Other factors; I have a IQ of 138, and the president of three organizations at our school. By the way, Miami and Denver are private schools. The school I attend is a private academy where A's are not easy, AP classes are not offered. My GPA has also gone up every term, most recently at a 3.75.

DU and UM are out of the question with your ACT score and GPA. I can't tell you about ASU, simply because I'm not familiar enough with their academics.

You have to concentrate on your Fall semester of the Senior year, since that is likely to be the last transcripts colleges receive.

If you're dead set on these schools, you need to retake the ACT and try for a 25.

They'll look at evidence of well rounded experience - clubs, sports, volunteer activity, etc.

You will have to make the most of the latter to make up for a weaker GPA. You really should try to raise it as much as possible before you graduate (Honors, AP courses, depending on your school system).

One more note: you can also follow the route many other students take, complete a few semesters at a big State U or local college, make the best grades possible, and then apply as a transfer student.

You've got mediocre scores. Why would you expect to get into a good school. The best schools you could get into would be expensive private schools. Invest in a college guidebook and see how your grades compare with students they have accepted. Check the online U.S.News & World Report rankings and data on colleges. What are your SAT's? That's what schools use. I've never seen any rankings of schools by ACT. I just happen to have a friend who had a 22 when he took the ACT. That equates to an IQ of about 120. Not bad. With an IQ that high you should have had a near 4.0. Why were your grades so low? An ACT of 23 equates to 1070 on the SAT verbal & math.

I'd retake the test. You should score higher. Maybe you had a bad day. Why did you take the ACT instead of the SAT?

U of Miami was listed 55, Denver 85. I couldn't find ASU.
None of these are top schools. I've done extensive research on the best schools to go to when I was in graduate school. Northwestern and Rice have the alumini that are most satisfied with their education. One big factor to evaluate schools is whether you are going to be taught by grad students or professors. Grad students make terrible instructors. They are inexperienced and have a conflict between advancing their own careers and doing a good job teaching.

I think you'd have a decent shot at getting in to any of these schools. None of them are highly competitive. I've gone to Case Tech, now a part of Case Western Reserve, then Ohio State and San Francisco State. Case was the best. I was taught by brilliant faculty members. Ohio State used grad students. The school and students were mediocre. San Francisco State is a fine school, but it is a commuter school. Not suitable for an 18 yr old who wants a campus life.
