Because they do not have Unions that breed lazy workers that get paid whether they work hard or not. They have to work and do a good job if they want to get paid. In the US, they do not. The unions say they have to get paid a lot of money and cannot be fired even if they are lousy workers. In Japan, they have to work or get fired. They have a better incentive to perform well, come up with new and better ideas, and make better quality products. If they don't, they don't get paid.
