Well, taking birth control generally regulates your period, the length of your period, and the amount of flow. It should also decrease any pain that you regularly have during your cycle.

I also take Ortho Tri Cyclen Lo...I've been taking it for approximately three years and I love it. There are benefits and there are negatives.
Benefits
You know exactly when your period will start (for example, mine starts exactly three days after my last pill--which is always a Tuesday)
Shorter periods - Before the pill, mine lasted at least 5 days; now it lasts only three (and for me, that means no period on the weekend - - EVER!)
It's very safe. Providing you take it as you should, and not forget to take it some days, you wouldn't get pregnant.
Risks or disadvantages
You gain weight - But that's short lived. I gained approximately 7 pounds, and grew some breasts (which I was happy about) but lost all of it within 2-3 months.
The pill makes you hungry. If you don't want to gain weight, take the pill right before bed. Since the hunger is only temporary, you'll be asleep and by the time you awake, you would feel normal again.

scad answered pretty well. i'm also on ortho lo and have been for about three years. it regulated my cycle SO much. also reduced the pain i was experiencing during my period. its almost a science now, the wednesday of the week of the green pills i start my period and i'm done by saturday night. if you ever want to skip your period (planned a vacation or something and now you're supposed to start?) immediately start taking the white ones again after the week of the darkest blue.

They are usaully lighter, with less aches and less PMS, but this isnt the same for everyone. As a general rule, the women that gain weight on the pill will not get all the rewards. Take it for 3 months, then see if you think theres anything that you'd like to see if another pill could solve, such as increased frequency headaches. Good luck!!

I have been taking birth control pills since the 1970's. I have no cramps, no bloating, no PMS. My periods are so light I can just use pantyliners for a couple of days. I wouldn't have it any other way.

well apparently... the pill helps with the pains... which 90% of women take some sort of birth control simply for the cramps... and if anything, it should regulate your period if it's off-beat with what it should be...

The pill can help to lessen period cramps and can sometimes make your period shorter or lighter.
