All my links are here if they are of any use to you [just ignore all the other links on my Blinklist ;oP] - http://www.blinklist.com/Tarnished_Sprout/Autism - very few there, but I found them interesting.

Autism is a pervasive developmental disorder. Research has shown that there is a 'triad' of impairments; language, social skills and rigid thinking. This basically means that the person will find it difficult to communicate with others, they may find it difficult to have alterations in routine and they may not be able to understand the social and pragmatic aspects of life. This is not a disorder that can be cured but it can be managed with expert help from Speech and language therapists, psychologists and other health workers. It's best to start intervention at a young age. There is no one cause of autism so don't be fooled by the extremely tentative link to the MMR jab. There is no actual evidence for this. Go to the National Autistic Society website - it's very good.

the curious incident book is about a guy with aspergers which is on the autistic spectrum but generally not as pervasive as autism itself. Autism means that your child will lack a 'theory of mind' in that they find it hard to imagine things e.g., they can't put themselves in other people's shoes or play like other children. they will also probably have obsessions with certain things which makes them feel safe and if these obsessions are disrupted it can be difficult for them. they are also usually hyper sensitive to noise, touch and smell etc. self harm is common. Autism is a label which can help but also hinder.

the dog in the night time is about aspergers syndrome, a disorder on the autistic spectrum. i work with autistic children and the spectrum is so wide ranging that this is really not the place to look. you need professional advice from a doctor. good luck
