I am in retail sales and it irks me when clients instead of stating their promblem , say "I want to speak to Customer Service". Usually I say something to the effect , "to find someone in Customer service to best solve your concern , what is your promblem" What I really want to say is' Tell me your promblem, if I can't solve it , I will find someone that will'. Any suggestions to tell clients?

Why don't you just say "I'm the first-level customer service person-i'll try to help you". We are very used to being directed to customer service departments for things. What percentage of the time can you actually solve their problem? I might not want to tell everyone my business. If it is a financial problem, i might not want to tell you. Most salespeople have limited authority and customer service has more authority to take action to solve my problem.

I know, I used to hate that too. That and "I need to speak with your supervisor because I know you can't help me" How do you know if you haven't given me a chance!

The best way I would handle those is to say "I understand you would like to speak with customer service, but I want to assure you that I am fully able to handle your concern, how may I help you?"

Just say to them - "Maybe I can help you - what is it that you had a question about.."
