Web searches are not always reliable, and many of the brochures you pick up are totally geared for the "touristy" type of experience.

Easiest way to find what the locals do is to find locals that are friendly. Making friends is easy if you do not look like a tourist. If you go into a restaurant wearing a camera, carrying a back pack that says Disneyland Small World and a banner reflecting one of the six flags amusement parks locals are probably going to size you up as a tourist and point you in that direction. In a new area try to dress and present yourself in much the same manner as you see. Blend in if you will. Looking like a local, go get your hair cut or nails done depending or an event that everyone in life does. Grocery shopping, hardware store, Ice cream parlor etc and talk to people. 8 times out of 9 the people behind the counter or giving assistance live there. Strike up a conversation and before you go browse a local newspaper or magazine so you do not appear like you are looking for a tourist trap. Works every time and you will make some really neat friends.

When you get to where you are going, find a place (a coffee house, perhaps) that you already enjoy going to. Try to ask a few of the patrons or "locals" what that area has to offer. Bring a small notebook to use to write down directions, and possibly phone numbers to some of the people you meet. You will not only find somewhere to visit but will also have a new contact for that area.

First, when you get there, go to a place where you will find locals with interests similar to you (a bar, coffee shop, local library or bookstore, camping store, whatever). Then ask the people who work there, or the other patrons if they look friendly, where they like to go and what they like to do in the area. Not only will you find out where to visit, but you get to talk to a real person too!

Ask around, but use common sense, too. If one local says to check out something, get second and third opinions.

when you check into your hotel, ask the people who work there,or any of the locals you meet, they should be able to lead you in the right direction
