They are both primarily controlled by corporate interests. That's not to say that good people do exist in both parties.
They are "philosophically" different on a few wedge issues such as abortion, gun control, regulation of industry, etc...
I work close with government policy and there is more compromise between the parties than the media would allow us to believe. I hope this wasn't too complicated.
You can also check out the websites for the Republicans as well as the Democrats.

Stay "independent", that way Democrats and Republicans will be falling all over their feet trying to get your vote. You need a clear head when you go into the voting booth, and chose someone YOU think will do a good job.

Dems stand for adhereing to our constitution, balancing budgets, preserving the enviroment, working things out instead of going to war, education, national health care and helping those not so furtunate. They want you to live free and your life is your own.

Reps are more into keeping the public dumb, less schools, more defense spending (even though we have a bigger defense budget than all the countrys in the world combined), theatening and declaring war instead of negotiation. Laws that favor the wealthy, tax cuts that favor the wealthy. less civil rights, they want you to live like they want you to.

You can be somewhere in the middle, that's OK too. Just as long as you form your own opinion, not what someone tells you to believe.
