Good sanitation goes hand in hand with good health. If you limit where vectors live, breed and feed, you limit your family's chances of being infected by them.

Vectors (animals that can spread disease--rodents, flies, mosquitoes, etc) can spread aweful diseases, including heinously deadly ones like plague.

Sanitation inside the home is important because vectors cannot live if they're denied three things: food, water, and harborage. If you keep your kitchen and home free of food debris, roaches and rodents won't have anything to eat. If you eliminate all standing water in the home and keep faucets from leaking, they won't have a water supply. If you patch up all holes, cracks, & crevices in the walls, they won't have entry points into your home and thus, harborage.

Sanitation is important outside the home too. Standing water can breed mosquitoes, which can be a problem for West Nile Virus and other aweful diseases. Patching up exterior wall holes and replacing foundation vent screen with holes will prevent rodents from entering the crawlspace under your home, and thus prevent them from entering your home. Making sure your garbage is covered with tight fitting lids and is picked up once per week prevents flies from breeding (fly larvae take 7 1/2 days to grow from egg to mature fly) and avoids attracting rodents and other animals (raccoons and opposums especially, which can also carry disease).
