Why is it that it takes a catastrophy to unite our nation? Why are we fighting for citizens in other countries when we need to be helping people in our own? Why do we have to fix everyone elses governments but our own remains unchecked?

Well, we were founded as a country of individualists, and I find that a good thing. That's what Liberty is all about. But your point is well taken, that we need to help each other. The problem we have is in deciding what the fix should be, both in goals and in methods.

Take poverty, for example. Some people feel the solution is to tax the rich and provide hand-outs to the poor. I prefer the idea of helping poor people to become self-sufficient. Provide the opportunity to learn new things, to do things as co-ops and non-profit organizations, to experiment with self-employment without a ton of regulations and certifications and licensing and bureaucratic garbage.

A lady knows how to do those clever little braids with beads on them that look so cool, but she has to spend a year or two in cosmetology school to get a license to do them for her friends and neighbors. A fellow has a talent for handyman work, and can fix just about anything, but he's got to get a business license and a contractor's license and so forth, or be illegal and subject to fines and sanctions.

People used to support lots of fraternal service organizations that gave help to those in need, but now they can't afford to because the taxes take too much from them. But for every dollar in taxes, I'd be surprised if even one whole penny actually gets to a person who needs it: it gets absorbed in salaries for bureaucrats, and costs for their office furniture and their computer upgrade and their dental insurance. So much money is wasted by the government that we could cut the taxes by 90% if we just eliminated the things that don't actually do what they are claiming they do.

And I agree, there's no point going about telling other people how to run their country when we do such a crappy job of running our own.

Vote Libertarian for a change!

Preaching to the choir brother. I hear you loud and clear. We have immigrants coming to the US; yet we can't provide assistance to our own citizens (Katrina, homeless, education, 911). We fight against each other over labels such as Liberal vs. Conservatives; Republicans vs. Democrates and they all have failed us. We attempt to establish democracy around the world; yet our own citizens fight over abortion and gay marriage issues. We focus on civil uprising in other countries; yet we allow our own government to wiretap, and look into our private banking service without our knowledge. Charity begins at home; and since we are a country under God; let's remove the log from our own eye, before attempting to remove the spec from another country's eye.

AMEN !!!!!!!!! I couldn't agree with you more. I have always felt like we (USA) spends way too much time and MONEY on other countries; who I might add, don't give a damn. Right here in our own country, we have starving children and adults, an increased number of drug users, violence, and so on. But, it seems that Our Govt is not concerned about this.

Good thing the French didn't have your simplistic, myopic view of the world when we needed their help to defeat England in the American Revolution.
