back in the american west when they started to hav towns, i'm
sure u didint just carry a pooper scooper with u. didnt it sometimes
get to be s$$t city? inquirin minds want to know.

They usually had some minor offender required to do the dooty (heh). He would be given a barrel and a shovel and required to collect the manure. In general, there were large middens that accumulated near the stables and in the alleys, but folks did a lot of gardening (no Safeway for the kitchen!) and the manure made excellent fertilizer.
Of course, they had a rather more relaxed attitude towards hygiene than we do today.

As you may imagine, in major cities such as New York this was a significant issue. The city had special wagons that would go about early in the morning and pick up manure which was dumped in the river.

They never bathed then, at least not in the movies so why would they care if they stepped in horse poopy.

they probabaly just left it be, or the farmers came and cleaned it up and spread it over their crops for fertilizer

We would burn our manure pile when I was growing up. Maybe they did that.
