Spain, Portugal. France. Germany, Denmark, The Netherlands, Belgium, Andorra, Lichtenstein, Austria, England, Scotland, Ireland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Turkey, Greece, and Italy.

Visiting so many different countries and being exposed to their cultures has resulted inan education that I never would have received from books. As a typical tunnel-visioned American when I started out, thinking all countries outside of the Anglo-Ameican cultures were pretty backward, except for the redeeming artistry of France and the music and science of Germany, it was a rude awakening I experienced when I deplaned in cities every bit as modern as New York or Chicago or L A, with buildings that could put some of theirs to shame. It was also a slap at my narrow outlook to find that many of the persons I encountered could handle my native tongue infinitely better than I could handle theirs (if I had any knowledge of it at all). I had never thought of myself as provincial, but after a couple of trips to lands I'd never dreamed of seeing, I realized how too many of us are brought up with a sense of superioty about our country that has its good points but also engenders a snobish outlook that is completely at odds with reality.

Nevertheless, (and fortunately) I was not the "ugly American" type and quick to appreciate my world neighbors. I was conscientious about studying languages before traveling to a new country so that I could at least ask essential questions, and, regarding the pride an individual has in his native tongue, I was always careful to preface my question or remark with "Pardon me, I do not speak your language very well---" which always elicited a grateful reqponse from the person I was addressing. I had had German and the classic languages in college, and the latter, though dead, did help me with translantions, even if they were no help in modern Greek or Italian pronunciation.

Enough already! Be a traveller, not a tourist. Learn essential phrases. Appreciate all the opportunities you have to see how others live and enjoy life!
