Of course they do. Here I am a law abiding citizen of the USA and I have a very hard time find anybody that would insure me. I was born with a bad heart and have a Brain tumor and by no fault of mine I can't get insured but if I went to prison I would be a burden to the taxpayers and all my medical expenses would be free!!!!!!!!!!!!. Prisoners do have more luxury than many hard working americans who are law abiding. Prisoners should get nothing!! If anything is needed then charge their family members.
Prisons should get only the mininum from taxpayers and nothing more.

No jails and prisons do not have too many luxuries (unless you are a white collar criminal with lots of money). What you see on t.v. is not real. However, what every prison offers is different from state to state. First of all jail is different from prison. Jail is short term and prison is long term. The whole point of incarceration is rehabilitation unless a person is sentenced to life. People in prison work, and they are not allowed to sleep all day. When they eat and sleep is all scheduled. Anyone who will be let out of jail/prison needs rehabilitation services otherwise they will be "better" criminals and be a futher meneance to society. The jail/prison systems need serious scrutiny and change. There is too much corruption with the officers. Any luxury a prisoner seems to have is far outweighed by the corruption in the system and abuse by officers and fellow inmates.

Most prison inmates either work - or in some facilities, are locked away all day long (most get 1 hours of "exercise" out of their cells).
Martha Stewart had to work.
There is very, very little else for prison inmates to do. Television in most prisons is a limited kind of entertainment - and a "privilege" used to help control behavior - be a baddie, lose TV viewing privileges.
As for a commissary - that's just another word for a mess hall or cafeteria. Again, this depends on the prison - in some cases the inmates are fed off trays slid through holes in their cell doors. The food is often worse than terrible. In fact, in some states the wardens and guards make money by skimping on the food for the inmates.
"Chain gangs" were for a time forbidden by law; now some states have tried different ways to re-start this concept. The problem with these is that often the inmates are "rented" labor on sweetheart deals between prison officials and locals. Also, sometimes prison business activities compete with private sector employers - forbidden by law but done nonetheless.
The attitude implied in the question is that life is soft for prison inmates. Life isn't soft for most.
The problem with American prisons is that they are really not accomplishing much more than warehousing offenders, training many to be worse criminals later, and building a network of gang connections. While there is a hard core of very, very bad people in prisons, and perhaps a good percentage of inmates who fall into this category, a great many people are jailed for relatively minor crimes. Longer and longer sentences resulting from a national desire for revenge and harshness, even in such "victimless" crimes as addiction, are helping create a criminal underclass this country is ill-suited to address.
MAJOR "justice system" reforms are needed. Turning off the TVs is not even close to that kind of important work.

Some do, some don't. You have to consider the fact that they are shacked up most of the day with the possibility of contracting aerosolized diseases such as tuberculosis. All the "luxuries" that they have is in the hopes that when they return they'll be better citizens. The government just isn't implementing it correctly. I doubt ALL prisons have these luxories. Spend a week in prison, then see what your opinion is.

No, prison is not a fun place. And it does nothing to rehabilitate prisoners. It is well known that a small time crook can go into prison and come out a major prisoner. It makes people worse. Not to mention the gaurds are abusive and it's dangerous. Rape, beatings, and murder are all common aspects of prisoner life. Prisoners are treated as sub-human, and most of them are in there because they are from poor areas not recieving good benifits. People shoudl be actually rehabilitated, not sent to prison.

yes. they are in there for horrible things and they should not be treated like guests in a hotel. they are being punished. how would you like it to know that someone who robbed you house or even killed your friend was sitting in a cozy prison watching TV and not ever having to get off of their butt and work??? its just not fair. we are paying for people who have committed crimes to live better lives than many people out of prison do.
