Ok well Larry Gooberman (dudeguysaweet) fashion expert is here to help! First off, jeans are never formal! They can be dressy casual, but never formal. You're a guy I'm assuming. I would recommend going to your nearest department store and asking for help. A lot of fashionable gay guys work there and will be happy to help. If you insist on wearing jeans, you should wear a nice bright vibrant colored button-down shirt to make a bold statement. Try something from Gene Meyer or Kennith Cole. If you buy from one of these designers, a tie is not necessary. Actually, don't wear a tie! It will ruin it. Quite frankly, I think you should go for some nice black pants or knakis for summer. Go to the department store and ask for help there. I don't know what kind of guy you are (or even if you are a guy!) so I am not much help to you. If it is a real formal event, consider a suit (NOT JEANS!). That's all I have to say! I know I am fabulous.

If you're dressing formally then don't go in anything that looks like jeans!

If you wear black trousers, black shoes and a plain white shirt, then that should be enough. Don't wear a black tie, otherwise you'll look like you're going to a funeral. Wear a blue or red tie to give the outfit a bit of colour. If you can carry it off then do go for brighter coloured ties. You could also wear a blazer (jacket) that matches the trousers if it's a really forman event.

it really depends on where you are going... personally i would not wear the jeans-looking suit... the best thing is a slate or dark gray suit with a white shirt, and a red or blue tie.. with black shoes (not tennis shoess!!!)... its classical, clean, and SAFE... which is a really important if you are naive on formal dressing....
if your budget doesnt include getting a new suit with that jeans looking suit you should wear a white shirt with a dark red tie... it would look very nice.. i am going to put some links were you can see what would look nice... just ideas..

go to websites that sell suits so they can give you an idea of combinations. I personally like brooks brothers. I saw a few dark suits and I liked the light blue shirt underneath.
