For the last time, there isn't and never was supposed to be a correlation between minimum wage and "making a living." Minimum wage was developed simply for worker protection and was based on the fact that you would get an equal basis to start out with and some MOTIVATION to work hard and move up to better pay.
If you are an adult working 40 hours a week for minimum wage, there must be something else wrong.
Not to mention the market will set the wage. Having a minimum simply helps the bottom from falling out if there were a labor glut (never going to happen, right). Look at stores like Costco that pay significantly better than minimum wage because they recognize that they need quality people.

Because globalization of trade, namely US corporate access to cheap foreign labor markets has stagnated the minimum wage. The argument goes, and I'm afraid it is sadly true, that if you increase the minimum wage, jobs will leave the country for cheaper labor markets.
This is a shameful time for America when a man can work 40 hours a week and still be considered as living beneath the poverty level.
The answer is simply to place a tarriff on all imports which are compensatory for the difference in standards of living between the importing nation and the U.S. This will diminish the competitive advantage that US corporations have by offshoring jobs and if the tarriff was over-compensatory, it would bring them back because the companies in America would then have the competitive advantage of cheaper labor.

Recently, there was a vote by Congress which was proposed by the Democrats to raise the minimum raise but was voted down by the Republicans. The main reason the Republicans gave was that, the states should have the right to set the minimum wage for their citizens (which I think is a lod of bull, when has republicans ever been in favor for increased state rights) and raising the minimum wage would greatly decrease the number of jobs since most of the jobs in the U.S. are created by small businesses and employers would not be able to afford yhe ibcrease in salaries for their employees.

I guree people think of minimum-wage workers as teenagers with a part-time job who only want the money to buy abercrombie clothes, not people who can't get a job anywhere else and need to raise a family. If public opinion was changed and people could look at the minimum wage workers as people who need the money, it would be raised substantially. And if anything it only gives more money back to the goverment in the form of taxes.

The law of supply and demand will set wages, without governmental interference If you have skills that are in demand, you will make good money. If you have no skills, you will earn less. In some areas you can get hired at a fast food place at a starting rate of over $8.00/ hr, due to a shortage of workers!
If you are not happy with the wage you are making, you need to upgrade your skills and/ or find a better job!

Republican control of Congress. Dems have proposed raising it plenty of times. Individual states that have more progressive legislatures have a high min. wage than federal.

The political will is not there to increase the minimum wage. You will have to ask a NEOCON.
