My 24 y/o gelding is overly attached to my pony. I just bought a new horse this past weekend, and the attachement for the pony has seemed to worsen. He wont let the pony leave his side, or let him interact with the new horse. He just hurds him around the pasture. When I take the pony out to ride, he pays no attention to the new horse, and just whinnies, and paces, and carries on, even though the pony is in sight. The new horse wants to interact with the two of them, but my neurotic horse wont let him. Please, any ideas would be greatly appreciated, I am at my wits end.

This is totally normal.
Your new horse will need to find hid place in the herd.
It may take a month or more.
The old horse is freinds with the pony and does not want to loose his place or his friend.
Let the mbe and they will get it settled with in themselves.
Every time you chagne a herd memebr you bring in a whole new set of dymanimcs and it makes them upset until they each find their place in the herd.
They will do all sorts of strange things.
The whinnying and fit throwing is normal when you take away their firends. Mine both do it. The one leaving goes right away and could care less the one getting left pitchs a fit. Not bad but they do not like to be left behind.
Give it some time and just keep checking to make sure no one is getting hurt.

Give it time. This is not unusual. The older horse will calm down, but the attachment will remain. He will, however, calm down and get used to the new horse.
If you have a place to keep the pony occasionally away from the older horse, this will help. Take him to a freind;'s house for a week or so, and take him there once in a while. Your older horse will get used to his going off occasionally and this should help.

Slowly make your gelding stay for longer and longer in the pen without the pony. Sometimes moving it with other horses for a while or isolating it for a while will help.

you should try to put your 24yr old and your new horse together with out the pony and leave them together fro a couple of weeks that way thy will have to get to know each other with out the pony having to be in the middle of it all. good luck

hm thats really strange...how is your older horse's eye sight? He may be loosing his vision, and trying to use the pony as a "seeing eye horse", and it would also explain his dislike for your other horse...how big is the pony?

I'd try separating them for a while, ween them away from each other. I haven't had horses but maybe this will work. Good Luck!

I would put him up in a lot and maybe after being my himself for a while he will enjoy being with any other horse! I have a mare like that!

This happened to me too. They are still together, but if you want, a horse whisperer (behaviour therapist) is coming to the farm next week. You can e-mail me next friday, and i can ask him if you want. Best wishes.
