I've wondered this myself. I think that in the case of an illuminated sign, the landlord wants to continue to protect the lighting tubes from vandals so its quick & cheap to reverse the plastic panel.

have never seen it but i imagine its so ppl kno that the shop has actually closed as u wud b suprised how much it takes 2 convince ppl (actually had sum 1 force a door open then climb over 3 clothes stands then saw us all in plain clothes stripping the shop completely and then say "oh, ru closed then?")
