Try using the el cheapo litter from Walmart or Target (like $2-3 for a 20-lb bag) and litter liners. That way, you can change the litter whenever and the box itself won't stink. If you put the litter directly into the box, the plastic will always begin to smell, no matter how often it's changed.
And, this is going to sound harsh, but if a slightly less than fragrant litterbox makes you consider getting rid of your pet, maybe you're not an ideal person to own a cat. After all, what did you think the litterbox would smell like?

Try Tidy Cat with clumping action. Also, if it still continues to be a problem then emptying the box everyday is not unreasonable. Some cat pee and poo smell more than others so cleaning the cat box could be your only option. I have 3 cats and clean out the box twice a day.

I have 12 cats and the best cat litter I have found, for odor and clumping, is Wal-Mart's Special Kitty brand. It comes in a green box . Reasonable price and has worked way better than all of the expensive brands I have tried.

When we had cats, I used to Tidy Cats scoopable litter also and had to make sure that I really "dug down" to the bottom of the litterbox when cleaning it out. There are also bags that you can use to line the litterbox with that you can use to "sift" through the litter. Certainly made it easy to clean!

I use Tidy cat. If you are particularly sensitive to the odors, you should use the clumping type and scoop it daily. Also, make sure you have more than the thin layer they tell you to use on the box. I've found this to be insufficient.

i have a cat and use the scoopable litter. i also have one of those sifting litter pans. i sift every other day or so. are you in a tiny space? where are you keeping the litter box? to be honest, if you don't sift or scoop almost daily, you will have odor.

Arm and hammer multi cats work good. But you have to clean the box every day or it will stink!

A litterbox with a cover is a great idea. Also, try this litter called Swheat Scoop - it is all-wheat litter. It clumps well, doesn't smell, and you can even flush it.

I just use the tidy cats scoop one and for the most part... the order is pretty much gone. Except when it's fresh... but within 20 min the stench is gone.
