This is not the best way to get reliable information of course, but it is a good way to get real and more personal information from people who may have gone through the same experiences you're going through. Of course nothing beats professional advices from doctors, but sometimes there are some things that people just want to make sure of first before they go running to their doctors.
For instance, not everyone has a "textbook" experience with pregnancies or with babies, sometimes it's just a little bit different from what we read from books or what our doctors say - so we try to find out if what we're going through is really normal and if other people have been through the same thing, and knowing that there are some who have actually had the same things happened for them, it makes us feel that we are not alone.
One other bonus that you get from asking questions and getting answers from people is that you just don't get blunt and short prefessional answers, sometimes you get heartfelt answers that come from real, live and personal experiences from someone you really don't know, but who is willing to share.
Of course we can't help it that there are some "jackasses" out there who really don't know what they're saying but wants to say stuff anyways because they have nothing better to do. Just ignore them. People come from all different shapes and sizes and different intellects as well.
Besides, Yahoo Answers is fun and interactive, and most of all, free. You don't have to pay for an office visit at the doctor's to get some pretty good info here which could be (or not be) reliable after all.

So many times the doctors and professionals ARE the jackasses and I find that most of the good advice I've received over the years.....no matter WHAT the subject, has been by regular people who have had the same experience. Doctors are very necessary, but the first thing they do is fill out that little perscription to fix all your problems. Hell, half the pediatricians dont' have kids themselves......try asking them what to do when you've been up for 25 hours straight and the infant won't stop crying. It's a joke. But I guarantee there are plenty of good parents out there who've HAD to find a solution because it's their own child, and that's why they share the information.

It may be a great way to gain ideas that can help YOU find a better answer.
I agree that in most cases, you need to do your own research and ask experts.
As to babies and children, well, I have found that the experience of other parents is extremely useful information. I don't always follow their advice (and given mine are nearly grown, I rarely ask for advice anymore) but I put it "in my toolchest" in case there is an occasion where another point of view or idea may prove useful.
And doctors don't know it all, and do come with their own biases.
No matter where you get your info, you have to be smart about your own choices and decisions.

If you feel that the people on here who are legitimately trying to help are "random jackasses", then may I ask what you are doing on here? Just call the doctor, make an appointment, wait a week or so and then pay $75 to hear the answer. Makes no difference to us!

well there are many moms and dads out here on yahoo answers that have children. some people give you an honest answer others give a disrespectful answer. and yes you could ask a doctor nurse or family advisor but how long does it take them to get back to you? you could also look for some websites that have the information you are needing or yahoo answers. when i answers questions i try to give the best example i have experienced to the asker.

This really isn't a website for a serious medical problem. If you don't think we are smart enought to answer your question than call your Dr and ask him/her. And why do we have to be random jackasses? I am actually very nice, until some moron calls me a jackass. Then I just get pissy...

If you're looking for an answer that someone in your situation may have...then yes this is a great way to ask that question. BUT there are too many people on here asking "could I be pregnant?" or "my inners are bleeding through my ears and eyes, should I see a doctor?" these people shouldn't be wasting their time on the net. I believe they are just looking for attention.

With this, you aren't getting facts toward answering the question you ask, but many different opinions that you can pool yourself into your own answer, after compiling the other answers and considering what the truth is yourself. It is sort of like a Wiki site inside your mind, a wiki site works by having many people add information and other people add more and correct any mistakes, thus making things more precise. Honestly, not many things are really Facts anymore anyways :)

I think most of the time people that are asking questions are looking more for life experiences, different perspectives and opinions.. If it was something really important I am sure people wouldn't be a moron and ask a stranger and not see a doctor or something like that.
