Here's my advice for breaking a porn addiction- same thing applies to a sex addiction

Breaking a porn addiction is tough. I know, I am coming up on 1 year of abstinence. It is not something you can do with a simple quick fix (eg: just get a porn filter). I had a friend of a friend who went to jail because his addiction got out of control. His words of advice- Get Hard Core Help NOW. Don't think you can just overcome it alone. I spent years trying to overcome on my own and it always came back, and every time it did, I got worse (I would get more down on myself for failing and that would just make the cycle worse).

My recommendations

1. Education - Find out about addiction recovery and specifically about porn addiction

2. Get a specialist - The best advice I can give is to find a psychologist that specializes specifically in porn addiction. They are a little hard to find but there are getting to be more and more of them (the problem is growing rapidly)

3. Join a support group- I found group therapy to be very helpful - not a complete solution, but very helpful. Sexaholics Anonymous is a good one (I found a similar group through my church). I was totally opposed to groups (grew up making fun of people in recovery groups and was even taught that groups were evil), but when I really got humble enough to get help, I found great strength from meeting with people who had overcome the addiction themselves and were willing to share ideas with me.

4- Patience- It probably took you a little while to get addicted- your brain will go on autopilot everytime you see anything that reminds you of your addiction- it will take time to re-program your brain to not freak out everytime you see a banner ad or get a spam invite. Don't use this as an excuse to stop fighting it- just know that it will take time and effort.

5.Get as far away from the source as possible- I had to make the committment to stay as far from the temptation line as possible. I still do not have internet access at home (nor satelite or cable), and I keep my office arranged in a way that people can walk by at anytime and see what I am doing. You can't get close to the line and hope that you won't fall- you have to keep yourself as far from the line as possible. I used to believe that galking at women in public was acceptable, afterall everyone else does it, guys joke about it all the time- for me I have had to adopt the stance that 'he who looketh on a woman to lust after her has already committed adultry in his heart'. I now look away when I see a girl jogging down the street or when an attractive girl is driving next to me etc.

Anyway I could go on for hours with tips and strategies- I hope this helps. Don't give up- it is a hard one to kick, but you can do it.

BTW - How addicted was I? at my worst I would spend 6-7 hours a day 5 or 6 days a week viewing porn and acting out. Sometimes I would spend 24 hours nonstop.

There is a such thing as sexaholics anonymous support group. You should search the web for locations for groups.
