If you are young and you have really bad cramps during your period along with other symptoms you might want to talk to your doctor first before taking the birth control pills. Tell him/her all of the symptoms you are having. It may be something more serious and if detected early it can save you a lot of pain in the future.
I had severe pain that would restrict me to bed and I could not go to work. I had this pain ever since I started my periods. I am now 37 years old and finally a doctor did a laporoscopic procedure and it turned out I had severe endometriosis. I had to have a total hysterectomy taking everything out (uterus, tubes and ovaries). I will never be able to give birth to a child now. If it would have been caught earlier than my chances of having children would have been better.

Yes, I was prescribed the pill by the summer before my 7th grade year. I had already had a laparoscopy the year before. It normally does and will help with the cramps. I went from missing 1 week of school overy month to being able to attned school regularly again. A doctor will want to do an exam before he/she prescribes it to you but that is for the best and they will come regularly after that. For some of us there are no other choices besides a life of birth control pills but it is worth it to function.

I have been on birth control for many years and I never have cramps and it also lightens the flow. Everyone's body reacts differently to the pill. You may have side effects and maybe not. When I first got on the pill I lost weight. I don't have nausea from it and I never have PMS.

Yes it is true, but their are many side effects. Withdrawl, lack of concentration, dizziness, nausea, etc., but it will help you with your cramps.
However if your at home and not on vacation or in school, just toughen it out-- the safer way, eat veggies, watch a movie, play games, exercise, take a stroll.

I feel weird answering this because I'm a guy obviously, but I had a conversation with my best friend who's actually saving her virginity for marriage, and she said she's been taking birth control for a while simply because it helps ease the pain with her cramps.

It works but they don't go completely away. Cramps will always be there just not as bad. It also works great if your periods come at weird times. It helps them come like clockwork every month but you need to take the ritualistically. Same time everyday and try not to miss any otherwise it might screw things up.
