It i supposed to be a fereral offense to put anything besides mail in the mail box, i.e. non-mail newspaper or fliers. Only items that have passed through the post office and have had postage paid are supposed to go in there. It used to be a $300 fine to use a mailbox for bussiness other than official US Postal Service deliveries.

It is a violation of federal law for anyone other than a postal worker or mailbox owner to put anything in a mailbox. It doesn't matter what it was for, even if it was an invitation to a neighbor's BBQ. It's punishable by a $300 fine for each offense!

Yes. It is only supposed to be used for U.S. Mail. If you want to leave a flyer or something like that, you need to use the newspaper box or stick it behind the flag.
