Earned Run Average. It's a statistic for pitchers that measures how good they are at preventing runs, and is expressed in terms of earned runs allowed for every 9 innings pitched. A lower ERA is better. It is calculated by the following formula:

ERA = (ER/IP)*9

where ER is earned runs allowed and IP is the number of innings pitched.

Earned Run Average. The amount of runs a pitcher has given up per 9 innings pitched.

Take earned runs, divide by how many innings pitched. That will determine how many runs that pitcher has given up per inning pitched. Multipy that number by 9.0, to determine how many runs that pitcher would give up in 9 innings.

Example:
Pitcher has given up 9 earned runs in 30 innings. The pitchers ERA is:
9/30 = .3
.3 x 9 = 2.70
