I'm going to Cyprus in September? I'm staying in Paphos but renting a car. Grateful for things to do in the north and the south.

You absolutely MUST see the excavated archaeological sites around the island. Some are the places where an early proto-archaeologist, and later first director of the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art, discovered hundreds of statues and wonderful artifacts. Regrettably, this fellow, a blowhard, did not make decent archaeological notations about thhis work. Still, now there has been excellent work done on the island.

A very good web site with lots of detail about the archeaology of Cyprus is at .

If I were there, it would be off to Kyrenia and the excavated remains of one of the oldest shipwrecks ever recovered. There's a replica of that ancient ship, too. Then over to Limassol to probe around the old parts of the port and poke at what used to be the diplomatic residences of consuls from around the world.

Certainly locating dramatic vistas - easy to find in Cyprus - for wonderful early morning and late evening photography is a must. Just keep an eye out for great spots to go with a little picnic basket or coffee thermos.

You can write in advance to the Cyprus American archaeological institute and make great connections for interesting spots - and visit their outstanding facility, too.

Take along both Turkish and Greek phrasebooks. The country is divided along ethnic lines.

Have a great time, wish I were going along!

I went to Pafos last New Year. Weather was very pleasant. Very hot in summer. Stayed at the St. George Hotel in Khlorakis. Go to the harbour in Pafos. Beautiful at sunset. Just off the harbour are the Mosaics. Entry is very cheap. Mostly wealthy Romans owned the houses that the mosaics were discovered in. Of course there are no houses left but the mosaics are just wonderful. Plenty of fresh fish in the restaurants on the harbour locally caught and good prices. Buy some leather goods, handbags etc - very reasonable (wish i'd bought more when I came home to Wales and remembered the prices!) Go to the Troodos Mountains by hired jeep. Hair-raising travel but well worth it!. The South of Cyprus, as you are probably aware, is now part of the European Community and the North is Turkish. Bus travel is very cheap. Don't know much about the North unfortunately but Karenia is supposed to be beautiful. Silver products seem to be the thing Jewellery, that is, but not that cheap but very different designs and mostly hand made. I am hoping to go back there in August/September time but it is 40 centrigrade then. Air-conditioning is a must then. When you go, the climate should be just right. Have a lovely time! I don't know where you are from but driving is on the left hand side of the road the same as Britain so was excellent for me and, of course, everyone speaks good English.Nearly forgot! There is a new town and and an old town inPafos. Don't forget to check out the market in the old part!
